Thanks to their microporous structure and high ion-exchange capacity, these materials are able to selectively retain pollutants, thereby improving the quality of the treated water. Natural and synthetic zeolites, together with other specific adsorbents, are used in treatment plants both to comply with environmental regulations and to produce safe drinking water.<\/p>\n<p>The main contaminants that can be removed by filtration using zeolites and adsorbent materials include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Heavy metals:<\/strong> lead, arsenic, mercury, nickel, cadmium, copper, zinc and hexavalent chromium.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ammonia and nitrogen compounds:<\/strong> ammonium, nitrates and nitrites.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sulphates and fluorides:<\/strong> removal of excess sulphates and fluorides from groundwater.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Organic compounds<\/strong>: pesticides, herbicides, chlorinated solvents and aromatic hydrocarbons.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Phosphates<\/strong>: reducing phosphorus concentrations to prevent eutrophication.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Radioactive substances:<\/strong> caesium, strontium and other radionuclides present in contaminated water.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Emerging micropollutants:<\/strong> pharmaceutical residues and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The effectiveness of these technologies depends on the type of adsorbent used, the operating conditions and the initial concentration of the contaminants.
